Getting to know Loreto Mexico
Loreto Mexico lies on the eastern coast of Baja California Sur, between the Sierra de la Giganta and the Gulf of California. The town is a base for boat trips into Bahía de Loreto National Park and journeys inland to San Javier. Its mission and waterfront also give you reasons to spend time in town before travelling farther afield.
Loreto was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2012. Start around the mission and malecón to understand the town's setting, then decide how much of your stay to devote to the islands, the mountains or seasonal wildlife. This guide is independent of public authorities, tourism offices and tour operators.

Our take
For a mission visit choose the guided land excursion; for the water, compare the island trips with the sunset cruise. The tasting tour suits a town visit.

Islands, whales and the sea
Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Catalina are the five islands named in park information. A boat trip gives you a view of their coasts and, on suitable days, an opportunity to snorkel or stop ashore. Island access and weather affect the itinerary. A park wristband is required, but it does not grant unrestricted landing everywhere.
Read our Isla Coronado guide for island outings, or compare the equipment and conditions on the snorkeling page. Take rubbish away, leave pets and introduced plants off the islands and give wildlife space. Sightings and landings cannot be guaranteed.
Whale watching is seasonal. The published Loreto observation season runs from 1 January to 30 April 2027, while a local operator describes early February to mid March as the usual blue whale window. The whale guide explains authorised boats and responsible distances. Gray whale day trips to Magdalena Bay cross the peninsula to the Pacific side.
Mission history and the harbour
The mission of Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó was founded on 25 October 1697. Its present fabric is not all from that founding year. Next to the church, the Museo de las Misiones occupies a former storehouse and presents the history of 18 Jesuit missions. Museum hours and admission are separate from any arrangements at the church.
Inland, the San Javier mission offers a different mountain setting. Its mission was founded in 1699 and its present church dates from the eighteenth century. Allow a separate outing for the journey and consider the day's road conditions.
The waterfront and marina are useful points of orientation for a boat day. The town marina, Puerto Escondido and Danzante Bay are different departure areas, so use the meeting point associated with your chosen excursion. The boat guide explains what to compare.

Plan your time in Loreto
Loreto International Airport is identified by LTO. A local transfer is a practical first choice for a stay in the centre; a rental car is an option for exploring beyond town. See getting there and compare the centre, Nopoló and southern areas in where to stay.
Winter northwest winds can affect boats, while summer heat deserves attention when planning time outside. The season guide helps match dates to your interests and the weather page explains the climate averages. Choose a departure with a clear meeting point and leave space in your schedule for conditions on the day.
